Historic Preservation

Steiner at Wicker’s Creek (Weckquaesgeck)

Henry John Steiner has been involved in many historic preservation efforts.  Perhaps the most significant was his role as co-leader in the successful 1996 Sleepy Hollow renaming, when historic Sleepy Hollow reclaimed its rightful name and international recognition.  He has also been an ardent campaigner to preserve Hudson River historical sites from profit driven exploitation—both private and corporate.

A few of the causes he has lent his support to are:

The recognition and preservation of Sleepy Hollow as an important national historic and cultural site

The preservation of the house and grounds of the John C. Fremont estate

The preservation of the house and grounds of the Phelps-James estate

The preservation of the Tarrytown Lakes

The preservation of original Beekmantown residences

The preservation of and public access to post-industrial sites along the Hudson River

The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow

The John C. Fremont House

The Phelps-James House

The Tarrytown Lakes

The General Motors Site
